Home Leasing Partners with GreenSpark Solar to Power Rochester Affordable Housing Project
Rochester, NY – July 10, 2024 – GreenSpark Solar is proud to announce its support of Home Leasing in its transformative affordable housing project in the City of Rochester. This initiative, led by Home Leasing, will convert 130,000 sq. ft. of unused space from the historic Hickey Freeman building at 1155 N. Clinton Ave. into a vibrant mixed-use, mixed-income community.
Electricity-powered affordable housing in the heart of Rochester
The redevelopment will create 134 affordable apartments for low-income adults, including 44 supportive housing units for seniors under the Empire State Supportive Housing Initiative (ESSHI). The building will be 100% electricity-powered and heated using geothermal technology. The project also includes over 77,000 sq. ft. of manufacturing space for continued clothing production. This significant development will provide high-quality, affordable housing for seniors in one of Rochester’s lowest-income neighborhoods.
GreenSpark Solar is installing a 291 kW DC (kWdc) commercial solar array on the building’s rooftop, providing clean, renewable energy to power the affordable housing complex. This collaboration between two locally-owned and headquartered companies, GreenSpark and Home Leasing, is a testament to their shared commitment to community improvement and sustainable development in the Rochester region.

This partnership builds on the two companies’ successful completion of a previous 2MW affordable housing solar project, reinforcing their ongoing commitment to renewable energy and community development.

The solar installation is funded through a combination of NYSERDA’s NY-Sun Program, Affordable Housing Incentives through NYSERDA’S Multifamily Building Program, and a 30% federal tax credit. Installation of the roof-mounted solar array is expected to begin in summer 2024.
