The Inside Scoop to Going Solar with GreenSpark
What it's like to go solar with GreenSpark (from an insider's perspective!)
At GreenSpark, our employees care about our planet and our company’s mission. Our COO, George McConochie, says, “At GreenSpark, we are sincere in our belief that solar energy is a force for positive change, and as such, we feel a moral obligation to ‘practice what we preach.’ Employees at GreenSpark should be able to harness the benefits of the work we all do, so we incentivize those investments with significant discounts. We also use employee installations as opportunities for company-wide training, testing out new technologies, and for recycling/upcycling old or slightly used equipment that still has significant life remaining.”
GreenSpark’s Junior Accountant, Lori Pulvino, recently went solar. Below is what she had to say about her experience.
How long have you been working at GreenSpark?
Just shy of four years. I applied for the position because of the industry and its philosophy toward the planet.
Did you know much about solar before you started working here?
Turns out very little. I feel like I learn something new every day.
How long did you want to go solar before you finally did?
We’ve been interested in solar for many years, but we waited until our roof was replaced to actually do it.
What made you decide to go solar?
Primarily because it’s better for the planet, I’ve always tried to minimize my impact on the environment. Also, the recent and predicted future rate hikes played a part. Being an employee and constantly around the chatter certainly fueled my enthusiasm. I wanted to go solar before I became an employee. The incentives sure helped too!
What benefits do GreenSpark employees get for going solar?
A nice employee discount 🙂
For me, it was also a benefit to see the crew in action from start to finish. I really enjoyed the customer experience. I was told I didn’t get special treatment and was treated like any other customer. I was really impressed with everyone involved.
Have you noticed a difference in your energy bill yet since going solar?
Yes. Our system is relatively new, but we have one fully electric car and one hybrid, and we expect to cover our electric bill entirely. We plan to replace our gas appliances with electric ones as they fail and hope to generate enough to cover those future needs as well. We’ll expand our system if needed.
What would you say to people considering going solar but haven’t committed yet?
Go for it! The sooner, the better! Do what you can to reduce your carbon footprint now! Unfortunately, the global impact of higher rates will exist, but you will no longer be directly impacted by the rising utility rates. I’d go totally off grid if I could. Every roof should have panels on it, in my humble opinion. 🙂
Many people aren’t sure if solar is affordable; how do you feel about the investment?
It’s not cheap, but the incentives are very helpful. Something is comforting about not paying a big utility big money for a basic need. It will pay for itself in the short term.
