Long Acre Farms: Small Business Grows Sustainably with Solar Energy
In 2015, Doug and Joan Allen of Long Acre Farms partnered with GreenSpark Solar to install a 72.8 kW ground-mounted solar array designed to cover 100% of the farm’s electricity needs. The system powered their diverse operations, including their farm, winery, and ice cream shop, and was projected to save the business over $300,000 across the system’s lifetime while paying for itself within five years.
But as Long Acre Farms grew, so did their energy demands. In 2023, the Allens expanded their business to include a wedding and event venue—adding new buildings and additional electricity usage. To meet this increased demand sustainably, they once again turned to GreenSpark Solar.
GreenSpark worked closely with Long Acre Farms to reconfigure their existing solar system for optimal efficiency. The original ground-mounted array was redirected to help power the new event facilities, while a new 21.6 kW roof-mounted solar array was installed behind the meter to offset energy use at the main buildings. This tailored approach ensured the most cost-effective solution while continuing to prioritize clean, renewable energy.
