The Seneca Nation Residential Solar Project
Empowering Community Through Clean Energy
El Seneca Nation Residential Solar Project—a partnership between the Seneca Nation and GreenSpark—was recognized as Revista Solar Builder’s 2023 Project of the Year, a national honor celebrating innovation and impact in renewable energy.
Solar Builder is a leading industry publication highlighting the best solar projects across the country, from design and construction to community-driven clean energy initiatives. The Seneca Nation’s project stood out for its groundbreaking structure and far-reaching benefits for Nation members.
Bringing Renewable Energy Home
The Seneca Nation Residential Program was made possible through a federal grant and solar incentives through the Ley de Reducción de la Inflación. Together, these funding sources enabled the Nation to partner with GreenSpark to make solar power more accessible and affordable for community members.
Since the program’s launch, more than 20 homes across the Nation have received clean, local, cost-effective energycon 200 kW of installations completed in phase one and phase two continuing through 2024.
This collaboration not only advances the Nation’s energy sovereignty but also reinforces a shared commitment to sustainability, economic independence, and environmental stewardship.
A Model for Equitable Solar Access
El Seneca Energy’s program’s structure is both unique and replicable, designed to make solar adoption accessible to as many Nation members as possible.
Residential systems up to 10 kW are offered to homeowners at a discount of up to 90%, made possible through the combination of federal incentives and the Nation’s strategic use of grant funding.
Participants can then finance the remaining balance through the Seneca Nation Federal Credit Union, keeping the economic benefits—and energy independence—within the community.
By centering equity and local ownership, the Seneca Nation is setting an example for how Indigenous-led clean energy programs can expand access and strengthen community resilience.
A Partnership Rooted in Shared Values
GreenSpark’s relationship with the Seneca Nation began nearly a decade ago, with the installation of a wind turbine and large-scale solar array. Since then, the partnership has continued to grow, grounded in mutual respect, shared values, and a collective vision for a clean energy future.
