Sustainable Design Powered by Solar for the Community Library of DeWitt and Jamesville
When the Community Library of Dewitt and Jamesville was constructed, sustainability was built into every detail of its stunning design. GreenSpark Solar was honored to serve as the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) partner, helping the library maximize its rooftop to generate clean, renewable energy for the community.
Smart Design Meets Clean Energy
The building’s western sawtooth roofline created the perfect angle for solar panels. As EPC provider, GreenSpark installed four solar arrays, totaling 240 panels, generating approximately 24,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity annually. That clean energy offsets 10–15% of the library’s annual electricity needs, helping reduce reliance on fossil fuels while lowering operational costs.
A Living, Green Rooftop
In addition to its solar arrays, the library’s west-facing flat roof features a living green roof planted with chives, Angelina Stonecrop, and Aizoon Stonecrop. These plantings naturally absorb precipitation, reduce stormwater runoff, and provide natural insulation that improves energy efficiency and extends the roof’s lifespan. Together, these features reflect the library’s commitment to sustainability and innovation.
The project’s thoughtful integration of green building features earned the library a spot in the 2018 American Libraries Design Showcase, highlighting its role as a model for community-focused, environmentally responsible design.
